Why I Started Little Legends Football

Updated: Jan 22

Hi, I’m Coach James Purvis, and I’m excited to share the story behind Little Legends Football! As a lifelong football enthusiast and youth coach, I’ve had the privilege of helping kids learn, grow, and fall in love with the game of football. It’s an experience I cherish, but over the years, I started to notice something that didn’t sit right with me—something that was holding young athletes back from reaching their full potential.

Why I started Little Legends Football

In most youth leagues, practices are run by volunteer coaches. These coaches dedicate their time and energy to help kids play the game, which is incredible. But here’s the challenge: the structure of team practices—and the limited time and resources available—makes it nearly impossible to focus on the individual development of every player. Even the best coaches in the league face this challenge.

Team practices are essential for teaching teamwork, strategy, and the basics of the game. However, they are just that: team-focused. There’s little room for the individualized attention that young players need to truly grow and develop their skills. As a result, many kids miss out on the foundational training that can set them up for success later in their football journey.

The Need for Individualized Coaching

I started digging deeper and looking into what helps young athletes thrive, and the research was clear:

Athletes learn and master skills up to 80% faster when they receive individualized coaching. Why? Because the focus is entirely on their unique strengths, weaknesses, and goals.

• In team practices, position-specific training is almost nonexistent for younger kids. Most volunteer coaches simply don’t have the time or expertise to break things down for quarterbacks, receivers, or defenders during a one-hour practice.

Repetitions are key to mastering football skills, but they’re incredibly limited in team settings. For example, in a flag football team with 10+ players practicing for an hour a week, each child might only get a handful of meaningful reps. That’s simply not enough to build muscle memory and confidence.

• Studies show that athletes get 3-5x more repetitions during individualized coaching sessions than they do in team practices.

Generic feedback holds players back. Without specific, real-time guidance tailored to their position and technique, it’s difficult for players to understand what they’re doing wrong and how to improve. Athletes improve 45% faster when they receive personalized feedback.

This is why I started Little Legends Football.

The Mission of Little Legends Football

I created Little Legends Football to fill the gap I saw in youth football training. My mission is to provide young athletes with the tools, skills, and confidence they need to excel—not just in football, but in life.

At Little Legends Football, I focus on the key areas that are often overlooked in team practices:

1. Position-Specific Training: Whether your child plays quarterback, receiver, or defender, I tailor every drill and technique to their specific position. This targeted approach helps them focus on the skills that matter most for their role on the field.

2. Maximized Repetitions: In my training sessions, kids get constant reps—far more than they would in a typical team practice. Repetition builds muscle memory, sharpens technique, and boosts confidence.

3. Real-Time, Detailed Feedback: Every player receives personalized, position-specific guidance during our sessions. I help them identify mistakes, correct them, and reinforce proper form, ensuring they improve quickly and effectively.

I also emphasize the importance of building confidence, leadership, and a love for the game. Football isn’t just about physical skills—it’s about becoming a well-rounded athlete and individual.

A Frustration I Want to Fix

As a coach, I’ve seen it too often: kids who have the talent and passion for the game but struggle to perform at their best. It can be tough for parents, too, watching their child fall short of their potential because they haven’t been given the right tools to succeed.

I want to change that. I want every child to feel confident, capable, and ready to take on any challenge on the field. And I want to empower parents to see their kids thrive—not just in football but in life.

How Little Legends Football Helps Your Child

With Little Legends Football, I aim to unlock the potential in every young athlete by focusing on:

Skills Development: From throwing and catching to footwork and decision-making, I teach the fundamentals that form the foundation of great football players.

Building Confidence: Every child deserves to feel confident in their abilities, and my coaching is designed to build that confidence step by step.

Encouraging Leadership: Football teaches valuable lessons about teamwork and leadership, and I help kids develop those qualities alongside their technical skills.

A Lifelong Love for the Game: Above all, I want kids to enjoy football and the joy of working hard and seeing themselves improve.
